If a patient is not able to refuse from alcohol, according to WHO data, the best drink will be red dry wine. It contains polyphenol that provides a positive effect during diabetes mellitus:

  • The tone of the blood vessels is kept;

  • The sugar content should not exceed 5% in alcohol;
  • The beverage drinks may be taken only during a good compensation of diabetes mellitus;
  • A diabetic patient may consume alcohol only if the sugar balance is good, and does not exceed 8 mmol/L;
  • A roughly safe daily dose for patients with diabetes is 250-300 ml of wine;
  • Diabetic patients are allowed consuming light ale and lager in the dose not more than 500 mg per day;
  • Alcohol should be consumed either during, or after meals. Do not take alcohol before meals, on an empty stomach;
  • The everyday use of the beverage drinks is prohibited. A break between the use should be at least 3 days.

Patients consuming alcohol during diabetes mellitus should beware of the delayed alcohol hypoglycemia, especially if they use insulin injections. Fast carbohydrates should be available all the time in order to make up a sugar deficit in the blood. If you had a lot of alcohol in the evening, hypoglycemia may appear at night. Therefore, before sleeping, it is necessary to indicate the sugar level in the blood and have food containing carbohydrates.

Patients with diabetes mellitus must avoid the alcohol consumption in the following cases:

  • A patient has a severe type of pancreatitis and dysfunction of the pancreatic gland;
  • A patient has organic disorders in the nervous system caused by the action of diabetes mellitus;
  • The affection of the liver and kidneys is observed during diabetes mellitus;
  • The glucose level is more than 8 mmol/L in the blood.
